TCIA
Tennessee Commission of Indian Affairs
The statute authorizing this
board expired: 30 June 2010
As of 1 July 2010
the State of TN no longer has an Indian affairs commission.
Prior to adjourning on 10 June 2010
the 106th TN General Assembly
failed to take action on bills to extend the Commission.
Most believe the Commission's demise was due to the influence of monies
paid to TN legislators holding key committee seats by an out-of-state
special interest group,
known as the
Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma-formed
in 1975.
This page will remain for resource purposes and to aid
in
the preservation of the TCIA's history -
the good, the bad & the ugly.
As documents become available they will be
added to the page.
Watch the Sunset Review Hearing held 22 Oct. '09
Note: The composition of
the commission changed after the sunset review hearing, as did community
sentiment concerning the commission, so much so that this commission was referred to as the "NEW Commission". Most in the community
previously opposed to its extension became advocates for its extension.
Support for it was growing among state legislators previously opposed to it
due to its failed history among other reasons.
House Republican Leader
Jason Mumpower described the New Commission as "a progressive, proactive
group that is able to work together."
